Rosemary’s Diary

Day One:

Dear Diary, This is my second Email. I failed miserably the first time. Hopefully I’ll catch on to this computer but it may take a long time. My goal is to use Email and to receive messages because it has become “the way of the world” but I still like my telephone better. Pray for me!

Day Five:

Dear Diary, I have had my computer five days and it is not yet my best friend. However, I expect it to become a better friend and my link to the young generation who enjoy using it. The key is practice, practice, practice. So far I have received Emails, sent Emails, added Email addresses and deleted messages. So far my Emails have been from my children or grandchildren. Maybe the computer will keep us close even tho’ the miles separate us. The telephone is still my best friend but, of course, I have been enjoying it for eighty years and the computer for five days! Goodbye for now.

Day Six:

Dear Diary, The real reason I wanted an easy computer was because
I felt the need for Email to keep up with our far-flung family and
friends. Also, various groups I belong to ask for Email addresses.
I have been the only one without Email and so here I am, trying to
master a new skill at the age of eighty. In just one week, thanks to
my outstanding teacher, my daughter, I can send and receive Email!
It is a miracle! It is getting easier each day but I am a long way from being fluent.
My teacher introduced me to THE WEB! We found information about my woman’s club,
the PEO Sisterhood, and about the Cutco Co.’s “guaranteed for life” policy for their cutlery.
Now I know how to get my broken scissors repaired or replaced. Maybe this computer
will help me in many ways besides Email, but I LIKE EMAIL BEST so far. This is a friendly
computer, the best one I’ve seen yet. Bye for now.

Day Eight:

Dear Diary, I will let you know that that the Go Computer has helped me this weekend. We’re having our annual Brass Band Festival in my little hometown, so I’ve been telling my far away family about it. It has been helpful to write one letter and to send it to everyone at the same time. Someday, they need to come to our Festival to see and hear maybe twenty brass bands from all over the East USA! I have to go out and hear more bands. Goodbye for now.

Day Ten:

Dear Diary, Usually, now, my Email does what I want it to do. But I make mistakes in spacing, capitalization, and sometimes hit the wrong key accidentally. I guess it doesn’t really matter when writing to friends and family, which is all I plan to do for now. We had a BIG music festival this weekend in my little hometown. Three days of brass bands from all over the East Coast. I may have told you this before. I’m worn out from fixing picnic food, helping with a breakfast for 500 people, and staying up late at night listening to the music. Now our town is very quiet as usual. The next excitement will probably be July Fourth! I must read how to add Email addresses next. Maybe I’ll try that tomorrow. So far, so good with my GO Computer. At least the Email is getting easier and I am not as intimidated by the computer.

Day Eleven:

Dear Diary, I was writing a long letter telling you how well I am getting along with my new friend, my GO Computer, and all of a sudden my letter disappeared! Now I’ll have to read the instruction book to find out what happened. I’ll write again tomorrow when I am older and wiser. Goodbye for now.

Day Twelve:

Dear Diary, When I came home from handbell practice just now, I had four new messages. Just before I went to bell practice I had read four other messages. This may be too much of a good thing. It would be good if I were lonesome but I am never lonesome. I have many volunteer jobs, books to read, lessons to study because I am a Church School teacher and club activities that involve community work. How do people find time to answer so many Emails each day? I may have a tiger by the tail. Maybe I’ll have more time when I get old. I’m only eighty at the moment!

Day Thirteen:

Dear Diary, Senior citizens are told that certain activities keep our brains healthy: for example reading, playing bridge and learning new things. I think computers fall into this category and the designed for SENIORS™ GO Computer has helped to wake up my aging brain. Since my GO Computer came into my life, other activities seem easier. Focusing on piano and bell choir music has gotten easier, and my memory is better at remembering the key points of the Bible lessons I teach at my church. My GO Computer is improving my memory and my ability to stay focused on the task at hand. GO, GO Computer! Revive those old brains.

Day Fourteen:

Dear Diary, I received a call from the people at Go Computer and a message telling me how to use the HELP channel. Thanks. So far Email and I are OK on our own and I have really enjoyed using it. I only check my Email one time each day and send responses as necessary. Some of my friends check all day long for new messages but I am out all day serving in various volunteer capacities. My friends are beginning to come to see me and to meet my new computer. They watch me demonstrate the few things I do so far, and they are impressed with the computer’s friendliness. They say they would like to become computer literate. I am thrilled that in only a week or so I have learned enough to communicate by Email. If I can, anyone can. Goodbye for now.

Day Fifteen:

Dear Diary, I’m enjoying the news articles on the computer this week. My local small town newspaper has very little national news. I’m growing more fond each day of the Email! It’s nice to be in touch with family, friends and groups that use this service. I have just sent the address of a virtual tour of an apartment I am buying to my children. They live far away and say my apartment is COOL as is the fact that I can send them this information! Thanks for helping me master the entertainment aspects of Email 101! My computer will fit right into my new life in my new apartment!

Day Nineteen:

Dear Diary, This morning I clicked on the information about firstSTREET, the Jitterbug phone and the GO Computer. It was fun to read more about these familiar products. I’ve told many friends about all of this and hope they are checking out these three aides to better “senior” living. I also clicked on the HELP button just to see how it works. I appreciated the message the other day about the HELP aspect of the program. That is a nice service but at my beginner stage I can’t think of a sensible question to ask! I’m getting braver about experimenting with the web categories and think this is a positive sign that I am making progress as a computer user. More later.

Day Twenty-Four:

Dear Diary, This computer has been pronounced superbly adequate for business and pleasure by my sister-in-law, my second “teacher extraordinaire”. She has taught me how to make greeting cards and how to use the Internet. I looked up biographical information about Dr. Ephriam McDowell, and information about his historic Danville home where I give tours as a docent. There were great pictures and accurate entries of his biography and of his home which is owned by the doctors of KY., and is open daily to the public. Dr. McDowell performed the first successful ovariotomy in the world on Christmas Day in 1809. The more I use my GO Computer, the more I like it. Goodbye.

Day Twenty-Seven:

Dear Diary, I have found a wonderful new (to me!) use for the designed for SENIORS® GO Computer: PARTY INVITATIONS! I tested this on twelve friends this week. I invited them to a “theatre party” at our outdoor theatre, The Pioneer Playhouse. This theatre produced an original play about our famous doctor Ephriam McDowell who, in 1809, performed the first ovariotomy in the world. I work as a docent at Dr. McDowell’s historic home and so was particularly interested in this drama. I sent the invitation to my party via email to all of the people involved and received many email responses back. This made it easy to buy the right number of tickets and to make the reservations! The computer is better than the telephone in many cases. I never thought I’d say that, but I am becoming a “believer”! Thank you, GO Computer.
